Furry motorcyclist Dave Myers has admitted he is “learning to live with cancer” as he provides a health update amid treatment.
Dave, who went public with his diagnosis in May, chose not to publicly reveal the type of cancer he has, but previously told his fans that he is undergoing chemotherapy.
The 64-year-old chef appeared on BBC Breakfast on Tuesday and told viewers he was “doing well” and wants to tailor the filming to his treatment.
‘I’m kind of fine’: Hairy Biker Dave Myers admitted he’s ‘learning to live with cancer’ as he gives a health update amid treatment
He said: ‘[The treatment] it’s still ongoing, but I’m doing well, it’s like a lot of people, it’s something you learn to live with,’ he said.
Dave, who has taken a break from filming since the diagnosis, returned to BBC viewers’ screens on Tuesday night for the new series Hairy Bikers Go Local.
Speaking about the new series, he said: “It was an idea that came from a lot of chefs not knowing what’s on their own doorstep.”
“If you have amazing providers that are just around the corner, then maybe they don’t know it.”
Tricky: The chef, 64, appeared on BBC Breakfast on Tuesday and told viewers he was “doing fine” and wants to tailor the filming to his treatment.
He continued: “So it’s a bit like speed dating, there are Michelin star chefs, people who run pubs, and I would say 80% of the time, they don’t know it.”
He added that he expected filming of new shows to resume, but that it would have to “fit in” with his treatment.
It comes after Dave made his long-awaited return to television earlier this month when he appeared on Saturday Kitchen’s holiday special with Si, in the midst of his battle with cancer.
He said he had “had a rough year” but it was “great to be back” on TV, before touchingly adding: “There are times I didn’t think I’d be here for Christmas.”
Speaking on the show, he said: ‘It’s great to be back and what a way to celebrate Christmas being here! I’m over the moon to be back. It’s wonderful to be back, it’s been a tough year and I can’t pretend otherwise.
“There are times when I didn’t think I would be here by Christmas, but I have received a lot of help and I have to thank the doctors and nurses in Birmingham who got me back and the rehabilitation team who got me walking again.
‘And a shout out to Nurse Marion, who before my chemo brought me cake – it was the best banana bread in the world! But it’s nice to be back. If she has been taking care of me! The first time we were at Saturday Kitchen was 15 years ago!’
Happy: It comes after, earlier this month, Dave made his long-awaited return to television when he appeared on Saturday Kitchen’s holiday special with Si, in the midst of his battle with cancer.
She seemed happy and healthy on the show where she donned a festive red vest and cooked up a storm with Si making a coffee hazelnut cake.
In October, Dave explained that his life will change completely when he is cleared of cancer.
Speaking to The Guardian, he admitted the treatment has been a “big inconvenience” but said once he gets out on the other side, “life will never be the same again.”
Dave told the publication: ‘I’ll feel like I’ve made it when I get the nod on this bloody cancer. That is going to be completely life changing, life affirming. And life will never be the same again.
Dave explained that he now has 14 sessions in a chemo cycle, with six to go, saying, “A major inconvenience is the best way to describe it.”
He also explained the reason why he hasn’t told his fans what type of cancer he has: “Because everyone Googles, everyone becomes an amateur doctor… And I don’t want to be judged, yet.”
Tough: Dave, who went public with his diagnosis in May, has chosen not to publicly reveal the type of cancer he has, but did tell his fans that he is undergoing chemotherapy
He announced in May that he was undergoing chemotherapy and would be taking time off from work.
Dave revealed that he had “not been too good recently” and “this year is a cancellation”, while assuring fans that “the prognosis is good”.
Speaking about his medical condition with his cooking partner on TV, Si, he said: “I might be a bald cyclist for a while…it’s just something I have to live with.”
Dave said: “Anyway Kingy, I’ve got to confess it now, I haven’t been great recently and basically I have to get some chemo, you know all this stuff anyway, so this year is going to be a bit quiet for me
I’m not going to film, some of the festivals I won’t be able to go to, some may be fine, but this year is a bit negative for us.
“I had to speak out about this because I don’t want to hide under a rock, but I would love it if people would respect my privacy and let me go ahead and give Si and our team all the support they need.” , that would be great. But look, the prognosis is good, I’m going to be fine’.
He continued: “I just have to bundle up, take care of myself, eat sensibly and get through this mess, flog books and be a happy person, so within that, that’s where I am.”
“I might be a bald biker for a while so it’s just a warning, I don’t want to make a fuss about it, I actually look pretty bald.”
Dave has suffered from illness in the past after being diagnosed with a brain cyst in 1998, and then glaucoma, which is an eye condition that can lead to blindness.
The same year that he was diagnosed with a cyst on his brain, Dave sadly lost his fiancée to cancer, previously describing 1998 as the worst year of his life.
