Graeme Souness insists Manchester United midfielder Marcel Sabitzer should have been sent off against Leicester.

Sabitzer caught Leicester defender Wout Faes in the first half at Old Trafford with what looked like a rash challenge.

However, the 28-year-old, on loan from Bayern Munich, did not receive a card.

Souness emphasized that Sabitzer intended to foul his opponent.

Speaking on Sky Sports, Souness said: ‘I think this is a red card for a number of reasons. He is on his heels when the ball breaks him. It has been put aside. If you’re going to do someone, this is how you do it. If you make contact with the ball, what are you going to do with the ball? He’s looking for the player.

‘I don’t care what a referee who has never played the game has to say about it. That’s a shipment. That is a dangerous game. If that’s not dangerous play, what is? It’s been put aside, that’s a classic case of setting you up to get someone.

Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink added that he was surprised Sabitzer did not receive at least one yellow card.

Hasselbaink said: ‘I have seen that they have been given. I was surprised that nothing was done with a yellow at least.

Sabitzer was making his fourth appearance since joining United and enjoys making challenges regularly.

The Austrian international is hoping his loan at United will be successful, with the club still involved in four competitions.

Next weekend Erik ten Hag’s men will face Newcastle in the Carabao Cup final, while on March 1 they will play against West Ham in the fifth round of the FA Cup. In addition, they draw 2-2 with Barcelona for the second of their Europa League round of 16 tie.
