A popular Sydney weekend market will suddenly close for “personal reasons”.

The Glebe Markets, in Sydney’s inner west, have been open since 1992, but will now close on February 25.

The stall owners were informed about the closure by the managers of the much-loved markets in an email.

They were told the markets, which are located on the grounds of the Glebe Public School, will be closed, but the exact reason was not revealed, simply that the decision was prompted by “personal reasons”.

Furious merchants say the move caught them by surprise.

“It’s put me and a lot of people in a bit of a panic,” longtime Joseph Stellino said. ABC Radio Sydney.

“Many of the businesses will be severely affected due to the influx of people coming into the area on that particular day.”

Stellino said the markets draw at least 10,000 people to the area on Saturday.

He believes the closure will also damage neighboring businesses in the area.

The stall owner hopes someone else will pick up the markets and keep up his spirits.

A spokesman for the Department of Education said the department had no plans to close the markets.

Another stall owner, Jacky Pateman, said, “I think right now it’s the most vibrant and energetic it’s ever been.”
