Girl, 17, jumps from shopping mall to her death, kills woman below

A 17-year-old girl jumped to her death from a shopping mall and killed another woman when she landed on the pedestrian.

The high school teen jumped from a building in a busy shopping area in the Japanese city of Yokohama, hitting a 32-year-old woman who was out with her friends on Saturday night.

Both women were taken to hospital, where the girl died an hour later and the other woman shortly after.

While it is not clear why the girl committed suicide, more people under the age of 18 commit suicide in Japan on September 1 than on any other day, just before the start of the new school year, the BBC reports.

Last year, 513 child suicides were reported in Japan, with ‘problems at school’ being cited as the most common cause.

According to police, the girl is believed to have jumped from the deck on the 12th floor of NEWoMan Yokohama, a shopping mall directly connected to JR Yokohama Station, just before 6 p.m. Japan Today defeated.

According to police, the teenage girl lived in Kimitsu City, Chiba Prefecture, and the woman was an employee of the company in Yokohama’s Midori Ward.

It is also said that it was busy with shoppers at that time.

In July, a global suicide report found that Japan had the fourth highest suicide rate with 15.4 deaths per 100,000, followed by Hungary with 14.8 deaths per 100,000.

Researchers said: ‘South Korea recorded the highest number of deaths by suicide at 24.1 per 100,000 people, followed by Lithuania, Slovenia, Japan and Hungary.’

South Korea and Japan have particularly stressful educational and work environments, and a social stigma surrounding mental health, which can lead to higher suicide rates there.

In 2020, Japan was also reported to be facing a suicide crisis among women, after more people committed suicide in a month than died from Covid-19 in the entire year.
