The mother of Rep. George Santos said in a US government visa application that she was not even in the US at the time of the 9/11 attacks, despite her son’s claim that she “survived to the tragic events” of that day.
The revelation, which directly contradicts the claim made by the New York Republican who admitted to a series of fabrications, comes when a former New York Republican, Rep. Pete King, called him to resign, saying he was a “potential disaster” for the Republican Party and was “dragging the Republican caucus to a shameful place.”
It came on the same day that a man who lived with Santos for a few months said he would produce wads of cash, only to claim he was broke days later, and accused him of stealing his Burberry scarf.
Santos’ mother stated in a 2003 visa application to enter the US from Brazil that she had not been in the country since 1999, the Washington Post informed.
That was despite Santos’ claim on his campaign website: “George’s mother was in her office in the South Tower on September 11, 2001, when the horrifying events of that day unfolded.”

The site also said that she “survived the tragic events of 9/11, but passed away a few years later when she lost her battle with cancer.”
The unsubstantiated claim had an emotional impact on a Long Island district that lost many office workers and first responders during the 9/11 attacks.
Santos’s mother died in December 2016, when the son solicited donations to help pay for funeral expenses.
He also tweeted in 2021 that ‘9/11 took my mother’s life‘, although she died years after the attacks.
It was not the only tragedy that Santos adhered to. He claimed to have lost four employees during the Pulse nightclub attack in Florida, just to have that claim. unmounted after none of the 49 victims appeared linked to their companies.

“He was constantly saying, well, I’m going to sell my phone, do you know anybody who wants to buy it? And you know, I’m like why are you selling it? And he’s like, oh, don’t worry about it,” Santos said.
The allegations came a week in which a homeless disabled veteran accused Santos of stealing $3,000 from a GoFundMe campaign intended to operate on his ailing dog, and after the House Republican Party Steering Committee decided to give Santos seats on the House Small Business and Science, Space and Technology Committees.
