Gavin Newsom’s in-laws didn’t hang around to listen to their son-in-law during the pandemic and instead hot-footed it to Florida just as the COVID-19 took hold.

Kenneth Siebel Jr. and Judith Siebel who were longtime California residents switched the Golden State for the Sunshine State just as Newsom, a Democrat, was imposing restrictions across California.

The Siebel’s, who are registered Republicans, bought a $3.3 million home in Naples on Florida’s west coast as restrictions in California were tightening. The couple also became Florida residents.

As part of their son-in-law’s restrictions schools, businesses and churches were forced to close as the coronavirus spread. Meanwhile, his counterpart in Florida, Ron DeSantis, was doing his level best to keep the state open for business.

Newsom introduced a statewide shelter-in-place order that stayed in place until January 2021. It saw capacity limits placed on businesses including shops and restaurants.

The timing couldn’t have been better for the Siebel’s who although owning a home in Northern California, dropped $3.3 million on a new home in Naples on Florida’s west coast, according to Fox News.

The Siebels, whose daughter Jennifer has been married to Newsom for 14 years, even registered to vote in Florida in June 2020.

Around the time of their home purchase, Newsom had just implemented a statewide shelter-in-place order that would not be lifted until January 2021.

Business capacity limits and other restrictions would ultimately stay in place until June 2021.

The decisions crippled businesses across California with 40,000 estimated to have collapsed – the highest figure in any state across the nation.

By contrast, Florida Republican Governor Ron DeSantis decided to lift all restrictions and lockdown rules by September 2020.

Kenneth Siebel is a registered Republican according to Fox with the Siebel family’s trust having made a $5,000 contribution to the Friends of Ron DeSantis political action committee in 2022.

Siebel also gave $2,000 each to GOP Senators Ron Johnson of Wisconsin and Tom Cotton of Arkansas.

Both Newsom and DeSantis are both thought to be possible presidential candidates in the 2024 election.

Newsom could run as a Democratic presidential candidate should Joe Biden choose not to run for re-election.

Newsom has been openly critical of DeSantis’ policies and even aired a television ad in Florida encouraging them to move to California informing them their ‘freedom is under attack’ and that California was a place ‘where we still believe in freedom.’

DeSantis, meanwhile, is considered a 2024 presidential contender for the Republicans.
