Former boxing champion Jamel Herring, who fought in Iraq war, arrested on domestic violence allegations

Jamel Herring, the former junior lightweight champion who has traveled to Iraq twice, has been arrested in Ohio for alleged criminal mischief, domestic violence and assault.

The 39-year-old, who retired from boxing in May 2022, was booked into the Warren County Jail and records show he was given $50,000 bail for assault and $75,000 for domestic violence.

His next court appearance is scheduled for January 21. Haring served two tours in Iraq before taking up boxing.

“There were times when I saw things that you’re used to seeing in movies,” he told Ny Breaking in 2020.

“There was one time we were attacked with mortar shells and there were explosions all around me. I remember seeing my fellow Marines catch one of the enemy red-handed, capture him and interrogate him.

“It was the strangest experience seeing him. Knowing that he tried to kill us with bombs yesterday and being face to face with him the next day.

“I really struggled with PTSD (on returning to civilian life). Without boxing and my Navy family, I might never have gotten through it.

“The training helped take my mind off everything I had experienced in Iraq that was still going on in my head.”
