The film’s director, Olivia Wilde, recently explained how Harry came up with the song and revealed that he came up with the piano line that later became the focus of the song.
She said Variety he had asked for the number and then quickly turned in his part. She said, “In preparation, Harry called me and said, ‘What’s the trigger song? What’s the melody?’ I said, “I don’t know. I’m going to different writers to write it. Do you have something in mind?” And he said, “I’ll think about it.”
Olivia added: “Five minutes later he sent me a demo of his piano, and it was what ended up in the movie. He called me and said, “And this?” And I thought, “Yeah, that’s it. That’s it. And that’s really insane that you did that in five minutes.”
Harry added to the song, “I wanted something that could be both sweet and creepy, totally depending on the context. I remember playing it on the piano for the first time, and it had some kind of homemade nursery rhymes. Applied to the different moments in the film, I think it gets a few different lives – I hope.”
