Flight attendant reveals real reason they won’t lift your bag in the overhead locker for you

A flight attendant has revealed the real reason why people who work in this role don’t lift bags into the overhead bin for you.

On TikTok, Kat Kamalani, who worked as a flight attendant for six years, addressed her one million followers on the social media platform.

She said: ‘Funny fact… everyone thinks it’s the flight attendant’s job to lift your luggage into the bins, but that’s not the case.

‘Actually, our airline and a lot of other airlines say you shouldn’t do this because it causes so many injuries. And you’re not even covered.’

As it notes, the American Associate of Flight Attendants advises its members not to assist customers with heavy luggage in the event of injury because insurers will not cover medical bills.

She added: ‘Most airlines have little cards showing how to store your luggage… so it will be vertical or horizontal.’

Kat also advised her followers to test how much they can comfortably lift overhead, to ensure they don’t risk injury during a flight by trying to move a weight that’s too heavy for them.

If you have trouble lifting heavy weights, there’s no need to worry, Kat reassured viewers, because you can always swap items for a smaller bag, which can easily be stored under your seat.

She pointed out that such a move would help customers avoid the costs associated with storing extra bags in the hold.

Viewers responded to the video in the comments section, saying that you can always call for help from someone nearby if necessary.

They wrote: ‘Just asking a man?’ What else are they for?

Another added: ‘For a 6ft 2in it’s more a matter of height than weight. Especially with the new planes and new containers!’

One person wrote: ‘I’m a flight attendant and no, we won’t all help because that’s still lifting/holding half the bag which could hurt your back.’
