A communications expert has revealed the five simple phrases sophisticated people use to stand out and succeed.

According to Jessica Chen, who coaches professionals on how to use language to get ahead, an employee doesn’t have to be loud to get people’s attention.

“It’s not about being assertive, dominant or aggressive if that’s not your style,” Chen clarified.

“It’s about being purposeful and smart so that when you give your opinion, people listen,” she wrote in her essay for CNBC.

As Chen noted, talking about past successes can “create more opportunities.”

To avoid coming across as boastful, the skilled communicator advised people to use contrasts that emphasize “the progress you’ve made and the impact you’ve had.”
