Yobs clash with riot police and hurl fireworks at emergency services as Bonfire Night trouble flares across UK

Yobs across the country have clashed with riot police and thrown fireworks at emergency workers, amid a sharp increase in Bonfire Night problems.

In Manchester, the police were pelted with fireworks in the street by a large group of young people.

A large gang of between 20 and 30 teenagers are said to have built a ‘barricade’ in Vine Street, Gorton, using wooden pallets and mattresses.

They lit an illegal bonfire before firing fireworks at police officers and passing cars in disorder. Tactical emergency officers and firefighters arrived on scene around 6 p.m.

Two arrests were made for public order offences. Photos from the scene showed a number of police vans attending in an attempt to control the situation, disperse the crowd and extinguish the illegal bonfire.

A number of innocent motorists are believed to have been caught in the crossfire when flares were lit and thrown towards police vans on Tuesday evening.

It comes as emergency services were on high alert over Halloween and Bonfire Night, with police and fire services on hand to tackle incidents of anti-social behavior breaking out across the region.

Officers would patrol ‘hotspot areas’ to tackle problems such as nuisance fireworks, fires and crowds. There are also specialist resources available to be deployed.

Earlier, Chief Inspector John-Paul Ruffle, lead officer for anti-social behavior at Greater Manchester Police, said: ‘Quite simply, we want to get the message out that we will not tolerate anti-social behaviour, and in particular we will not assault or assault Emergency Workers in their work during this period.

“Anyone who engages in such behavior can expect to face the full force of the law.

‘Anti-social behavior is not a low-level crime; it can cause people misery and we are absolutely committed to tackling it in whatever way we can.”
