McDonald’s fans in furious debate over the name of their new (and tastier) new menu item: ‘Honestly, this is outrageous’

  • Maccas fans are furious over the name of a new potato-based menu item
  • Wednesday Scallops tossed Chicken Salt Potato
  • But the addition of the summer menu is known by many names, dividing the country

Maccas fans have been divided following the launch of potato scallops on the popular fast food chain’s summer menu.

The menu, which launched on Wednesday, has been the focus of debate ever since, with some customers targeting the chain’s ‘Aussie’ burger after the egg that had featured on the previous version was removed from the menu.

But burgergate was not the end as customers are now upset by the use of the term potato scallops.

Maccas launched potato scallops as part of its summer menu, but people are divided on its choice of name

Thousands of people have left comments on posts about potato treats – there seem to be three main names for them, potato pies, potato scallops, and potato fritters.

People in New South Wales and Queensland seem to be happy with the term “potato scallops”, but it has almost caused riots in the southern states.

Victorians tend to prefer the term potato cakes, while New Zealanders and some South Australians like to call them potato fritters.

“I’ve only known them as potato scallops and I’m 72,” said one woman.

“Potato pies always, however I have learned to tolerate the name scallop due to marrying a Queensland husband and wanting to stay married,” said another.

‘Neither, they’re bloody fritters,’ said a third.

Thousands of people commented on the names with people from Victoria stating that the only true scallop is a shellfish.

Maccas revealed that they consulted Grimace, one of their pets, about the name and stated that the potato scallop was appropriate.

‘If you were to eat a scallop, you would be eating a sea creature; if you were to order a scallop you would get the sea creature. It’s a potato pie,’ said a man.

But this definition provoked more boos in New South Wales.

“Potato scallops are made from scalloped potatoes, a culinary term for thin slices, they are nothing like a cake,” one man said.

Poll

What do you call them?

  • Potato cakes, right. 6 votes
  • Potato scallops, obviously. 5 votes
  • Potato fritters, I’m not stupid. 3 votes
  • Potato discs. 0 votes

‘We don’t say scallops, we say potato scallops for clarification,’ said another.

Others seemed to boycott them because of the name.

I won’t touch on the potato scallops, but I would have squashed some potato pancakes. I would estimate that I would give them a rating of 0 out of 10 based on their average name alone,” said one man.

The restaurant predicted the big debate and even made a video showing three people disagreeing over the name.

In the video, a man wants to talk about potato scallops, but someone corrects him and calls out potato cakes.

A third man appears in the background and is labeled ‘Kiwi’ as he yells ‘potato fritters’ into the camera.

The video spawned even more name suggestions, including ‘disco chip’ and ‘potato frisbee’.

Maccas’s team said they consulted ‘Grimace’, one of their former mascots, who confirmed they should be called potato scallops.

The menu item comes with a side of chicken salt.
