Fairfield West crash: Pedestrian struck by car and catapulted into the air while crossing a busy Sydney road

A man crossing a busy main road in Sydney’s west was hit by a car and catapulted into the air, with CCTV footage capturing the incident.

Paramedics were called to the intersection of Smithfield Rd and Polding St in Fairfield West at 7.20pm on Thursday after reports of a collision between a car and a pedestrian, police said.

Video shows the man waiting at the edge of the road, not at a designated intersection, before walking outside when traffic appears to slow.

The 41-year-old man attempts to cross the nearest lanes, but when he steps from behind a stationary car into the far lanes, a vehicle approaches him.

He then tries to run across the roadway as the car brakes, but is hit and sent flying into the air. He then lands on the asphalt in front of another car.

‘OOfficers from the Fairfield City Police Area Command arrived and found the man with serious head injuries and he was treated at the scene by NSW Ambulance paramedics,” police said.

The man was taken to Liverpool Hospital in a critical condition but is now in a serious but stable condition.

“The driver, a 62-year-old man, was not injured and was taken to Fairfield Hospital for mandatory tests.”

At least three ambulances and three patrol cars were sent to the site and police set up a crime scene.

Bystanders and drivers gathered at the edge of the road as detectives searched the area for evidence besides the man’s pair of running shoes thrown onto the bitumen.

“An investigation has been launched into the circumstances surrounding the accident,” police said.

Investigations are underway.
