Ronnie Radford dead: FA Cup legend dies aged 79 

FA Cup legend Ronnie Radford – known for his iconic 1972 Hereford United goal against Newcastle – has died aged 79.

Radford – who also played for Leeds United, Cheltenham Town and Newport County – will go down in FA Cup folklore for his incredible ranged attack against the Magpies who helped in a massive kill when they won 2-1.

His death has been confirmed by his former club Hereford, who announced the news with a statement on their official website.

“We are shocked by Ronnie’s passing and would like to extend our condolences to his family and friends at this very sad time.

Ronnie is not only part of Hereford United folklore, he is part of football history and has kept Hereford on the football map since 1972.

“His gentle manner, and kind and humble way of life embodied the man he was and he was always delighted to visit Edgar Street, meet old teammates and see the current team in action.

“We will always keep Ronnie close to our hearts at Edgar Street, not just at FA Cup moments, but forever and celebrate him and his tremendous role in propelling Hereford United to the forefront of the nation’s attention with that goal and being part of that team. .

“We will continue your spirit. Rest in peace Ronnie.’

Ronnie goes down in FA Cup folklore for his memorable goal against Newcastle in 1972

Radford began his career with Sheffield Wednesday in 1961 and became a journeyman of sorts – later joining Leeds and Cheltenham before moving on to Rugby Town, Newport and Hereford – where he wrote his name in history.

During a third round replay against Newcastle at Edgar Street stadium – Hereford’s home ground – Radford had grabbed a flick-on before hitting a lightning bolt into the roof of the net for the first time and flying past keeper Willie McFaul.

That sensational strike sparked a frenzy in the stadium as fans poured onto the pitch before extra time was played. Hereford then took a famous win when substitute Ricky George secured the winner – triggering another field invasion at the most memorable moment in the club’s history.

In the match, Newcastle wore a red jersey on one occasion due to a clash of kit colours. It’s the only time the Tyneside outfit has ever worn red.

Tributes began to pour in for Radford after his death was announced on Wednesday, with the official FA Cup Twitter account to pay their respects.

“RIP to the goalscorer of one of the most iconic goals in FA Cup history,” the statement read.

“With Ronnie Radford’s long-range attack, @HerefordUnited overcame the odds of beating @NewcastleUnited. Our thoughts are with his family at this time.

Newcastle United – the team he scored his famous goal against – also wrote a tribute post which read: ‘Although against us, a goal written forever in FA Cup folklore. Rest in peace, Ronnie.’

Another of his former clubs, Newport County, was also eager to show respect.

“The thoughts of #NCAFC are with the family and loved ones of former County player, Ronnie Radford. RIP, Ronnie.’
