Dozens of people reported hearing a loud “explosion” in the Washington DC area that shook homes and caused panic — though officials have not specified the cause of the loud bang.

At around 3:30 p.m. on Sunday, social media users reported hearing a huge ‘bang’ in the city.

That sparked a flurry of social media posts and speculation about the source, though none of it has been confirmed. Some suspected a sonic boom, while others suggested an earthquake.

Multiple agencies have received calls about the mysterious loud noise, which was heard as far away as Virginia.

Police would call the Federal Aviation Administration and others for more information.

The Department of Homeland Security said there is no threat at this time, but no reason was given.
