Nottingham Forest fans took to social media on Friday afternoon to celebrate Steve Cooper’s new three-year contract with the club.

The Welshman has agreed a deal that will keep him at the City Ground until 2025, after Forest owner Evangelos Marinakis decided to back his manager following talks earlier this week.

And following concerns that Cooper might be relieved of his duties – with Forest bottom of the Premier League – fans were quick to praise the ‘fantastic decision’ online.

The new deal for Cooper will be welcomed by supporters, as evidenced by the response on social media, which chanted his name even as the team slid to a fifth consecutive defeat the Monday before.

One cheering fan wrote: ‘Well I didn’t expect this, but this is the best news!!! Fantastic decision @mil7iadis [Evangelos Marinakis] and co! Just what the club needed, solidarity and support for the man who saw us go up! Get in!!!’

‘GREAT NEWS! Give credit to the management and ownership to stay with him, it’s what the fans wanted, consistency and continuity with a manager we know gets the club and we believe in,” another user tweeted.

A Forest fan said, ‘Brilliantly done! Desperately needed. Just the right response. Credit to all involved. Now let’s get the job done,” as he gathered for a turnaround in form.

Some users gave shorter responses to the news, one of which wrote “Great news” with a handful of “thumbs up” emojis added. “I forgive you, I love you all. We trust Cooper,” said another.

Earlier this week, his role was thought to be under threat, along with that of other high-ranking figures at the City Ground, including chief executive Dane Murphy and head of recruiting George Syrianos.

And after Monday’s 4-0 defeat at Leicester – which left Forest at the bottom of the table – Forest was believed to be exploring possible replacements for Cooper, including former Liverpool boss Rafael Benitez.

But after assessing the management market, Forest owner Marinakis has decided to continue with Cooper, who led Forest to promotion last season, despite taking over in September when the club was bottom of the championship.

Cooper had been tasked with bringing in 23 players since promotion, who had spent more than £150m this summer, and admitted after Leicester’s defeat that he was still trying to piece them together into a cohesive unit.

Cooper said: “I refuse to be really critical of the players as a group. Don’t want to sound soft and fluffy. That’s the last thing I am. It’s hard for them.

‘It’s a unique situation. Relationships and connections are built over time. We try to do that on the job in the most difficult competition in the world.’
