Ex-Socceroo is chosen to replace Dwight Yorke as Macarthur boss after the Man United legend’s exit 

Former Socceroos star Mile Sterjovski has set his sights on guiding Macarthur to the A-League Men’s final after being appointed manager following the shock departure of Dwight Yorke.

Yorke turned A-League rumors upside down on Saturday when it was confirmed that he and the club had agreed to part ways.

The former Manchester United striker has been linked with a move to Sydney FC to replace under-pressure manager Steve Corica.

Macarthur sits sixth on the ladder, just three points off third.

Sterjovski most recently worked as Macarthur’s academy coach and has been with the club since its inception in 2020.

The 43-year-old was introduced as the team’s manager at Monday’s training session and will take charge of their opener on Saturday afternoon against Western United at Campbelltown Sports Stadium.

The Bulls did not specify the length of Sterjovski’s contract.

Yorke reportedly questioned the professionalism of his players and the club in general.

“Since day one with this club, I have worked with the NPL side to help talented youngsters achieve their goal of becoming professional players,” Sterjovski said.

The players remain my top priority in this new role and I will do everything I can to help them reach their potential.

“I want to build on what the club has started this season and there will be no change to our goal of playing in football finals.”

Sterjovski, here with Socceroos star Tim Cahill, made 43 caps for Australia over a 10-year period.

Sterjovski enjoyed a brilliant playing career that included 43 appearances for the Socceroos between 2000 and 2010.

He was part of Australia’s squad for the 2006 World Cup and the following year’s Asian Cup, but was left out of Socceroos’ 23-man squad for the 2010 World Cup.

At club level, he played in England with Derby County and in France with Lille, as well as spells in Switzerland with FC Basel and in Turkey and China with Hacettepe and Dalian Aerbin respectively.

He also had A-League seasons with Perth Glory and Central Coast Mariners, retiring in 2014 after his second season with the latter.

Yorke’s tenure at Macarthur lasted just seven months, his last game in charge last Friday’s 1-0 loss to Adelaide.

The 51-year-old met club president Gino Marra on Saturday morning when it was decided that the club and manager would part ways.

Assistant Russell Latapy also left the club, leaving Macarthur to search for his third manager in the space of a year after Yorke was brought in to replace Ante Milicic.

Yorke helped the Bulls to their first piece of silverware last October when they lifted the Australian Cup.
