Ex-Australian Idol judge Meghan Trainor reveals the surprising way her time Down Under inspired the name of her baby son

Former Australian Idol judge Meghan Trainor has revealed how her time Down Under inspired her son’s name.

The Massachusetts-born pop star, 30, and her husband Daryl Sabara spent several months in Australia in 2023 while she filmed her role in the Channel Seven singing competition.

‘My baby was inside me when I was in Australia. His name is Barry Bruce, and he is perfect. He’s my little Australian baby and I’m so happy,” she told Nova’s Smallzy’s Surgery podcast this week:

Meghan said she got the inspiration for her son’s name from an iconic animated film set in Australia: Finding Nemo.

One of the stars of the 2003 film is the late Australian actor Barry Humphries, who voiced Bruce the shark.

“I thought Bruce would be cute because the shark in Finding Nemo is Australian and so is the baby, so I thought it would be cute if it was Barry Bruce,” Megan enthused.

Meghan and her Spy Kids star husband Daryl welcomed their second son Barry on July 1, 2023, shortly after she returned to the United States.

The couple announced the news in an Instagram post at the time, revealing that she had welcomed Barry exactly seven years after her and Daryl’s first date.

They are also the proud parents of three-year-old Riley.

Trainor was part of the Australian Idol jury last year, alongside Kyle Sandilands, Amy Shark and Harry Connick Jr.

Neither she nor Harry returned for this year’s season and were replaced by series veteran Marcia Hines.

Amy Shark and Kyle Sandilands are still judges for the popular singing competition.
