Image: Lionsgate Films

Genre: Black comedy drama
Duration: 1h 33m
Director: Jade Halley Bartlett
Form: Martin Freeman, Jenna Ortega, Dagmara Domińczyk

Martin Vrijman (The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey) and Jenna Ortega (Wednesday) stars in this thriller about a high school writing teacher who is seduced by a rich, bored and manipulative young student. Things are clearly going very, very badly.

From our review:

What Miller’s girl does best – and what gives Ortega the opportunity to absolutely own this film – is capture the specific era of adolescence where girls can easily shift back and forth between adulthood and childhood without warning. Ortega gets a chance here to play a downright predatory vamp and a giggling, shy schoolgirl, without the sense that either is a front or a mockery for Cairo. Her adult personality isn’t fully formed yet, and while she tries out faces, just as she tries out words like “cuss words” in her writing, they’re all still part of her – and they’re all part of why Mr. Miller should know better than to treat her as anything but a student.

New at Shudder

Caitlin Cronenberg’s feature debut is a horror thriller worthy of the family name. If something goes wrong, the family will have to choose one of them to offer as a replacement participant. Of course things get personal.

Genre: Action thriller
Duration: 2h 1m

Dev Patel stars in his directorial debut as a nameless street urchin who, years after his village is burned to the ground, makes a living as a monkey-masked fighter in an underground boxing club. He embarks on a campaign of brutal violence to take revenge on the men responsible.

From our review:

When Monkey man finally kicks into gear for the action scenes, there’s a clearer vision at work – although ‘clear’ may not be the word for it. Patel, in collaboration with fight choreographer Brahim Chab and cinematographer Sharone Meir (Whiplash), captures the battles up close and personal with a frenetic handheld camera that shakes and whips with the force of each blow, deftly stitching these shots together into dizzying, uninterrupted movements. The style is influenced by Korean, Indonesian and Bollywood action films, but what the style sometimes lacks in clarity it makes up for in ferocity and impact. The desperation of Kid’s first bathroom fight with Rana is brilliantly conveyed (Kher is fantastic in an old-fashioned heavy role), and the extended climax is occasionally stunning, though the editing sometimes struggles to maintain focus when things get busy.
