Sega announces Sonic Rumble, a Fall Guys-style mobile party game

Sega has been playing a little fast and loose with Sonic the Hedgehog lately, using the blue blur for experimental projects like The murder of Sonic the Hedgehog. At the same time, the films based on the franchise were surprisingly good. Here’s another treat for the Sonic lovers: Sega just announced Sonic rumblea 32-player mobile PvP game created in collaboration with Finnish studio Rovio.

Sonic rumble immediately invites comparisons with other party games, such as those in the Mario Party franchise, or Fall guys. It resembles Sonic Junk’The series’ minigames are slightly less annoying than Fall guys‘chaotic bean battle, with some rounds focusing on traditional platforming levels. Others, however, look much more brutal: at one point, a giant chewing robot approaches inexorably, taking out contenders left and right.

There can only be one winner out of 32 players. Players can also collect rings, which can unlock new cosmetics, such as a pirate costume for Shadow the Hedgehog. The tradition is that Sonic rumble is a Jumanjistyle world created by Dr. Eggman, and he managed to get the entire cast involved. It’s always fun to see new Sonic characters, like my beloved Big the Cat.

Sega will host a closed beta test from May 24 to 26; players can apply to test out the game on its official site. We expect the game to be released for everyone this winter.
