Escape To The Chateau’s Dick and Angel Strawbridge ‘halt business’ after Channel 4 cut ties

Dick and Angel Strawbridge of Escape To The Chateau have suspended wedding bookings at their French chateau after cutting ties with Channel 4.

The broadcaster has confirmed it will no longer be working with Dick, 63, and Angel, 45, on new productions ‘following a review’ of their behaviour.

The couple, who married in 2015 and have two children, have now put the £38,000-a-piece wedding service on hold.

Also on the back burner is their Chateau Under the Stars experience – where guests sleep in a glass dome for £350 a night – and a £75 Working Garden Day.

Their website states, “We are currently doing a two-year catching up on marriage. We will reopen the investigations as soon as possible!’

Angel is now reportedly looking to boost her profile with a TV appearance on Strictly or I’m A Celeb.

A source told The sun: ‘Now that she is no longer attached to Escape to the Chateau, she is considering all options.

“She would definitely go into the jungle and isn’t afraid to speak her mind.”

It comes after they were labeled ‘prickly’, ‘volatile’ and ‘a nightmare to work with’ amid their feud with Channel 4.

Sources close to the couple told MailOnline today that their on-set behavior was nothing like their “gorgeous” on-screen personas.

Insiders added that they couldn’t hide their “real characters” from crew members who spent weeks with them filming the popular show in northwestern France.

It has also been suggested that Channel 4’s culling of the hit show was ‘convenient’ as the series – which has been on screen for seven years and spawned numerous spin-offs – had run its course.

A source said, “Dick and Angel come across as the prettiest and sweetest couple on screen, literally like butter wouldn’t melt, but they’re not like that on screen.”

“It’s a full show, the production is in the castle with them for weeks, so they can’t hide their real characters — they can’t turn it on for two hours of recording and then not go back to their real persona.”

“They’re just prickly and volatile people and, as you can imagine, that’s a nightmare to work with.”

Channel 4 launched an independent investigation after production company Two Rivers Media raised concerns about the Strawbridges and announced it would no longer be working with them.

A Channel 4 spokeswoman said: ‘Following a review we have made the decision not to work with Dick and Angel on new productions in the future.’

The series made the couple household names as 2.5 million viewers regularly poured in to see the renovation of their 19th century Château de la Motte-Husson in Martigné-sur-Mayenne, France.

The series was previously created by production company Spark Media Partners, who oversaw the first four seasons from 2016 to 2018. But it also allegedly cut ties with the Strawbridges over a feud.

Sources claim that Channel 4 can no longer be associated with them in the current climate.

They said: ‘After the initial fallout, Dick and Angel had significant influence on Channel 4, so were able to replace [the production company]. It was less awake times then.

“But as we now live in much more awake times, Channel 4 cannot be seen to be associated with that kind of behaviour.

It just doesn’t wash anymore.

“And there’s also the sense that the series was up to speed after all — there’s pretty much nothing left to do in that castle, so they had a nifty endgame.”

The exact nature of the allegations is unknown, but the Hollywood website Deadline reported that three of the Strawbridges’ former colleagues claimed the pair had clashed with producers.

Feud: Sources claimed that Two Rivers Media, the company that produces Escape To The Chateau, had raised concerns about the presenting duo

In 2021, The Times reported that Angel called a producer a ‘f*****gc**t’ after complaining about his treatment in a recording.

However, Jonathan Hales, who produced and directed the last two seasons of Escape to the Chateau, told Deadline that he found the couple “warm and welcoming.”

He said: ‘Château de la Motte-Husson is first and foremost a family home, and since the day I arrived I have treated the Strawbridges with a level of respect that has always been reciprocated.

‘Although there is a lot of filming, the castle is not a normal film set. It should be taken into account that Dick and Angel not only run a busy events company, but also have three generations of family living together.’
