Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag’s priority this month is a new striker to replace Cristiano Ronaldo, but the Dutchman insists he won’t “burn money” just for the sake of it.

United’s £220m spending in the summer and continued uncertainty surrounding the club’s sale means finances are tight and a loan deal is preferred.

“We have a good team when all the players are available,” he added.

The Red Devils are currently short on strike following the departure of Cristiano Ronaldo last month.

“But with a lot of games to come, I think there is a need (for a striker).

“You need one that can make an impact, otherwise you’re just burning money.”

Ten Hag has no doubts about Anthony Martial’s ability to lead the attack despite a subdued performance at Wolves, and he backed the Frenchman to bounce back against Bournemouth.

“He didn’t play for a long time and probably this (Wolves) wasn’t his game,” the United manager said. ‘In the next match, I expect a better performance from him. I am convinced of that.

I am very happy with his performances in many games. If you look at the minutes he’s played and the impact he’s had so far, it’s really huge.
