A guest was furious after paying $31 for a classic pub dish with plain lettuce as a side salad.
Chloe Joyce ordered a chicken parmigiana at the Hawthorn Hotel in Melbourne’s east on Sunday.
The meal was served with fries and a house salad, which is automatically included with all main courses.
“Isn’t this the most pathetic ‘house salad’ you’ve ever seen in a bar?” she said in a TikTok clip.

The clip featured several strips of lettuce topped with a pickled onion.
“If I wanted lettuce I’d go to Woolworths,” Joyce said.
Hundreds of commenters were also not impressed with the side dish.

“That looks so sad,” someone wrote.
“That’s an insult to the salad,” wrote another.
“The sad onion makes it even funnier,” added a third.
Others felt that salads weren’t worth it when eating in a pub.
“Does anyone actually eat the salad they get at a pub meal, while mine always stays on my plate?” one person wrote.
Some defended the dish, saying that most pubs serve salads as a side dish.
“I love the hawthorn hotel salad. Please don’t change it,” one person wrote.
