A six-year-old Detroit kid shot his brother in the face and shoulder while playing with his father’s gun.
The baby jumped into his bouncer when their older sibling fired two shots from the unregistered semi-automatic around 7:40 p.m. Wednesday.
Charles Fitzgerald, assistant chief of the Detroit Police Department, said the children’s father was in the backyard of their home on Tennessee Street in the east side of the city with an uncle at the time, while their mother was in the home of a family member was nearby.
At a press conference at the scene, Fitzgerald said the baby is now in a stable condition.
The shooting took place Wednesday night at the 600 block of Tennessee Street in Detroit, Michigan
Visibly shocked, he said, “Here we are again. Another senseless, preventable, horrific incident for this young boy. It’s a baby – one year old.
“The baby was in his bouncer, the preliminary information is that another family member, a young child, grabbed a gun and shot his sibling, not once but twice.
“The one-year-old was shot through the cheek and through his left shoulder.
“We are very lucky that child is still with us.”
“We talk way too much about securing the guns here,” he added.
“There are gunlocks. There are gun safes. The highest shelf you can find in the house – put the gun as high as possible.’

The assistant chief said the six-year-old is also likely “traumatized” by the incident.
Syreeta Wilson, a member of Michigan’s East Side neighborhood, said the local community is shocked by the incident but not surprised.
‘It happens too much. We lose too many people because of this. These weapons,’ she said WXYZ Detroit.
‘Get a lock, a safe. Lock it in a closet so they can’t get to it. We really need to stop this. We are adults, they are children. They’re innocent,’
Investigators remain on the scene and Detroit police have said the evidence will be presented to a prosecutor.
Fitzgerald said on Wednesday that everyone involved is cooperating with police.
