Dermot Mulroney reveals he didn’t work for a YEAR after My Best Friend’s Wedding – and he blames the movie’s poster

Second billing after Julia Roberts didn’t come without some drawbacks for Dermot Mulroney.

The My Best Friend’s Wedding star, 60, admitted TMZ that he didn’t work for a year after the hit 1997 romantic comedy, and he blamed the movie poster.

“I was sitting there ready for the gift with purchase that comes with being in a hit movie, and instead I probably didn’t work for a year,” Mulroney revealed.

My Best Friend’s Wedding opened at No. 2 at the box office on June 20, 1997 behind Batman & Robin, grossing $127 million against a budget of $38 million.

Dermot Mulroney admitted to TMZ that he took a year off work after his hit 1997 romantic comedy My Best Friend’s Wedding, and blamed the film’s poster

“I put it down to the fact that I was so small on the poster, the little guy on the cake,” he said

“I thought, guys, if you had made me a little bigger, maybe I could have gotten a job,” Mulroney added.

The film starred Roberts, 56, as food critic Jules, who once vowed to her best friend Michael (Mulroney) that they would tie the knot if they were both single at 28.

When he tells her that he is getting married to his new love Kimmy (Cameron Diaz) in four days, Jules wants to sabotage the wedding.

The poster for My Best Friend’s Wedding featured Roberts standing over a wedding cake with bride and groom toppers featuring the faces of Diaz, 51, and Mulroney.

Mulroney eventually returned with 1999’s Goodbye Lover, starring Patricia Arquette, Don Johnson, Ellen DeGeneres and Mary-Louise Parker.

The actor has continued his romantic comedy career with titles such as The Wedding Date, Must Love Dogs (both 2005), and most recently last year’s Everyone But You starring Sydney Sweeney and Glen Powell.

The film also reunited Mulroney with My Best Friend’s Wedding co-star Rachel Griffiths.

In 2019, he reunited with co-stars Roberts, Diaz, 51, and co-star Rupert Everett for the cover of Entertainment Weekly.

“I liked that he was the lead in the movie and Julia Roberts liked him,” he explained of the role.

‘I loved those obvious elements, but he had his own little story. He was a sportswriter and he was in love in ways that many people still argue with me about.
