Dead Ringers trailer: Rachel Weisz plays identical twins

Rachel Weisz, 53, has taken on the role of identical twins Elliot and Beverly Mantle in the upcoming Amazon Prime limited series Dead Ringers.

The series is a remake of David Cronenberg’s 1988 film starring Jeremy Irons.

A new trailer dropped on Wednesday.

And they’ve never spent a day apart, leading showrunner and writer Alice Birch to call the series a “dark comedy, twisted thriller about these two dangerously codependent twins who are obsessed with each other.”

‘It’s a very intense relationship. They love each other very deeply, but I think they feel for each other very deeply, and that leads us to a more dangerous place of codependency.

“This was without a doubt the biggest challenge of my life as an actress,” said The Lovely Bones actress. ‘But also the happiest in many ways. It was hard work.’

Weisz added that each character’s writing was so distinct, so “psychologically layered and deep” that he felt like he was playing “two totally separate people on the page, even before I got into the hair, the makeup, the wardrobe and how they can look different.

And the Black Widow star also told the outlet what motivates each twin.

“Beverly is altruistic, thoughtful, caring, kind, has a complicated relationship with pleasure, really wants to change the way all women give birth, regardless of their financial situation, their wealth. And Elliot is very, very different,” Weisz said.

“She loves Beverly, so she’s going to follow her dream of changing the way women give birth, but she’s not altruistic. She likes science and she really wants to change the world through scientific research and discovery, and she is pushing the boundaries of what is ethical and what is not.

As a character in the trailer says: “Both are brilliant. Both are bottomless.

And for Birch, he wanted to show “the intensity of identical twins, the divine power that comes with being a doctor.”

Weisz is seen in a shot where she is leaning against a brick wall while smoking a cigarette and tons of blood on her white doctor’s coat.

Another shows her as one of the Mantle twins in bed kissing Britne Olford as Genevieve, as the pair get closer in their pajamas.

Pushing the Boundaries: The twins push the boundaries of medical ethics in an effort to challenge outdated practices and bring women’s healthcare to the forefront.

Wearing a red Handmaid’s Tale-esque cape, a red hair cover, red gloves, and a red face mask, the gynecologist holds a newborn baby in her arms.

Another creepy shot shows Rachel in a lab-like room with red lighting and two petri dishes that she looks like she’s inspecting.

Weisz is also serving as an executive producer for the limited series.

All six episodes drop on Amazon Prime on April 21.

Made by Women: The series features an almost entirely female creative team, including an all-female writers room.
