David Beckham’s OBE medal faux pas at Kate Middleton and William’s wedding

David Beckham’s Blunder at Kate and William’s Wedding! It was caught on camera… (before courtiers had a quiet word and straightened him out)

  • He swapped it for the ceremony, which took place 12 years ago this weekend

There are many times in life when you don’t want to fail – especially at a royal wedding watched by millions around the world.

And while David Beckham looked rather sweet in his Ralph Lauren morning suit, he made a little mistake at William and Kate’s wedding on April 29, 2011.

The ex-footballer wore his Order of the British Empire medal with confidence – except it was displayed on the wrong side.

Traditionally, they are worn on the left lapel along with most other medals. However, David arrived at the wedding ceremony with it on his right hand!

While few may have noticed, eagle-eyed commentators on the royal wedding certainly did, pointing out the flaw in their broadcasts.

However, it seems that David rectified his misdeed before the ceremony even began, after courtiers informed him of the proper way to wear it.

The football star was awarded the Queen’s OBE in 2003 for services to football, including captaining the England team in 2000, a title he held for six years.

In September last year, a video clip of their hour and a half documentary The Real Beckhams was released, showing how excited David and Victoria were to meet the Queen.

David told the cameras, “It’s really amazing because you hear about all the other OBEs over the years and one of them was Bobby Charlton and he was my idol and my dad’s idol.”

“To hear I got one,” he began. “It first hit me when I got a letter saying David Beckham OBE was on it. It is awesome.

“I would bring my mom and dad, I know they would appreciate it, but I think my grandma and grandpa will make it a great experience for them. My grandmother is a big fan of the royal family, so that’s good for them.’

David spoke of his excitement: “To hear I received one,” he began. “It first hit me when I got a letter saying David Beckham OBE was on it. It is awesome’

He then recalled his earlier meeting with Her Majesty: ‘I met the Queen at the Commonwealth Games when I opened it in Manchester. She was sweet.’

David made headlines last year when he was spotted waiting in line to pay his respects to the late Queen, who was lying in state at Westminster Hall. He waited 13 hours despite being given the chance to jump ahead by an MP.

“We all want to be here together. We all want to experience something where we celebrate the wonderful life of our Queen and I think something like that today is meant to be shared together,” he told BBC News.
