A police officer has shot a man believed to be armed with a knife near one of Australia’s busiest entertainment areas.

Officers and paramedics swarmed Chisholm Street in Darlinghurst at 4.40pm on Sunday, just a few hundred meters from the pubs, clubs, cafes and restaurants of Sydney’s Oxford Street.

Police responded to welfare concerns and upon arrival they were reportedly confronted by a man aged 32 armed with a knife.

“The man allegedly approached NSW Ambulance officers and paramedics while armed, before an officer discharged his firearm,” NSW Police said.

‘The man was treated at the scene before being taken to St Vincent’s Hospital in a stable condition.

“A crime scene has been established and a number of residential streets closed.”

Police have now deployed a critical incident team from Leichhardt Police Area Command to investigate all circumstances surrounding the incident and whether the officer was justified in firing the weapon.

The investigation will be subject to an independent assessment.
