DANNY MURPHY: Declan Rice NEEDS to leave West Ham and Arsenal would be a great option… the midfield star is one of many English players who would give Gareth Southgate a pre-Euro 2024 boost by switching clubs this summer
- Declan Rice needs to leave West Ham and play Champions League football
- Jude Bellingham, Mason Mount and Harry Maguire could move this summer
- Harry Kane’s future at Tottenham is also unclear with Man Utd linked with the move
Half of the England team that beat Italy could move clubs this summer in a very eventful transfer window. Some think that Gareth Southgate should be concerned about the possible disruption of his players, but in reality I think he will benefit him at Euro 2024.
What could be better than Harry Kane and Declan Rice vying for big trophies, Harry Maguire and Kalvin Phillips playing first-team football, and Jude Bellingham tearing the Premier League apart.
It’s unusual to have so many England stars facing an uncertain future at the same time. He could also include goalkeeper Jordan Pickford if Everton are relegated, while Chelsea’s Mason Mount is also attracting interest.
Each individual’s situation is slightly different. Not all of them will transfer in the next window, but many will. Declan Rice, who scored the opener in Napoli and is scheduled to play Ukraine in Sunday’s game on Channel 4, has to leave West Ham. Ideally, he would have left last summer because he has had a hard time maintaining his best form on a team that doesn’t keep the ball or dominate games as well as the others.
He is 100 per cent ready to go to the next level and, at 24, he won’t want to wait any longer for Champions League football. Arsenal would be a great option and I think they would be an automatic starter. Chelsea’s appeal is also strong, having grown up supporting the club and playing in its academy.
Declan Rice has to leave West Ham at the end of the season for a Champions League club
Several England players could move this summer, which could help Southgate
If Rice has more than one suitor in the Premier League, Bellingham could choose any club in Europe. What he has achieved by going to Borussia Dortmund at just 19 years old is extraordinary.
I’m sure Real Madrid would love it, but I have a feeling he’d rather go back to England and be closer to family.
Jurgen Klopp told Virgil van Dijk that he would win titles at Manchester City but would still be forgotten 10 years later, while at Liverpool he would be a legend forever. I wouldn’t be surprised if the same type of sale could be used in Bellingham. Unlike Rice, he has experienced Champions League football, so it might not be such a crushing blow if Liverpool fail to make it by a year.
Maguire has so far defied the logic that you need to be a club regular to play well in a major tournament like the World Cup or Euro, but Southgate would still prefer him to do more than warm up the bench at Manchester United.
The defender has responded with great professionalism to the fall in the pecking order, but he does not seem like someone comfortable on the sidelines. I’d be surprised if he doesn’t wear another club shirt next season.
Phillips is slightly different. He may want to give it another chance to show that he can succeed at Manchester City. Once again, Southgate won’t want any of his players showing up to camp without minutes. Influences team selection. For example, could you risk Phillips again against Ukraine on Sunday after starting him in Italy?
Rice should look to play Champions League soccer and aim to win trophies
Harry Kane could finally leave Spurs at the end of the season with a possible move to Man Utd
The most intriguing case is that of Kane. Having given Gary Neville that interview about his future two years ago only to have Manchester City and Tottenham fail to agree a deal, Kane will be more circumspect this time around.
I don’t think he’s in any way committed to staying or leaving the Spurs at this point. It will depend on what the options are. City have Erling Haaland, Liverpool have Darwin Núñez and it would be hard for them to retain the affection of the Tottenham fans if they went to Chelsea or Arsenal.
A move abroad risks losing Alan Shearer’s Premier League goalscoring record, while Newcastle is not guaranteed to be more likely to win silver than Spurs. That leaves Manchester United as the most realistic destination.
Southgate will be sure his stars are in high demand. Far from being ominous, a few good transfers will only help England in Germany next year.
