Daniel Day-Lewis celebrates his 67th birthday with rare outing in NYC – after his My Left Foot director gave update on his acting retirement

Daniel Day-Lewis celebrated his 67th birthday on Monday with a getaway in the Big Apple.

The reclusive Oscar winner – whose last public appearance was at the National Board of Review Awards Gala in January – was spotted taking a solo stroll in Manhattan.

The There Will Be Blood star wore a casually chic navy blue outfit and kept a low profile with a baseball hat and dark tinted sunglasses.

His tattooed forearms were prominently displayed in the short-sleeved shirt, accessorized with a statement leather necklace and chunky combat boots with thick heels.

Although Daniel hasn’t made a film since 2017’s Phantom Thread, Jim Sheridan – the director of his films My Left Foot (1989), In the Name of the Father (1993) and The Boxer (1997) – recently said he’d like to to work with the Oscar winner again.

‘He says he’s done, I keep talking to him. I would love to do something with him again,” the Irish filmmaker said of the actor’s retirement ScreenDaily.

β€œHe’s just like everyone else: he opens the streamers and there are seven thousand choices, none of them are good,” he explained.

‘Film has moved from the public domain to a private domain – you have a remote control, you can stop it. It’s not the same experience.’

Nevertheless, the famed director said, “It would be great to see Daniel come back and do something ’cause he’s that good.”

Daniel’s Big Apple excursion was certainly a welcome treat for his fans, as the handsome actor was photographed in public for the first time in four years in May 2023.

However, he didn’t seem to be keeping a low profile as his ensemble was certainly eye-catching.

Sporting a bright blue tracksuit, a graffiti trucker hat and long gray hair, the star was quite the spectacle on the sidewalks of New York.

The Method actor hasn’t hit the red carpet since announcing his retirement in June 2017, following the release of Phantom Thread. ‘

A few months prior to the film’s planned release, Daniel made a dramatic announcement through a spokesperson announcing his retirement.

β€œThis is a private decision and neither he nor his representatives will comment further on this matter,” the statement concluded.

In a subsequent interview with Whe explained that he had wanted to retire several times and finally gave the announcement to force his own hand.

‘I knew it was unusual to make a statement. But I did want to draw a line. β€œI didn’t want to get sucked into another project,” he said.

β€œAll my life I’ve talked about quitting acting, and I don’t know why it was different this time, but the urge to quit took root in me, and it became a compulsion. It was something I had to do.”

With the announcement, Hollywood would lose the only actor to win three Best Actor Oscars.
