Cruise worker ‘murders newborn son on board ship’: Shocked co-workers raise alarm as ship sails off Tuscany

  • The newborn was discovered in a cabin the mother shared with other ship personnel
  • Police said the mother gave birth two days before killing her baby

A cruise worker on board an Italian ship ‘killed her newborn son’ when shocked colleagues raised the alarm as the ship sailed off the coast of Argentario, Tuscany.

The 28-year-old Filipina was part of the cabin crew on board the cruise ship and, according to her colleagues, had concealed her pregnancy.

In a horror sequence of events, the woman is said to have been in a hut when other staff heard piercing screams coming from the room.

They realized something was wrong when the wailing stopped and did not resume.

Fearing the worst, the panicked crew members immediately called the police.

Police rushed to the ship in a patrol boat and officers searched the ship’s cabin and other rooms while conducting photographic examinations.

The newborn’s body was discovered in the cabin the mother shared with other crew personnel.

After finding the new mother, who was reportedly in a confused state, she was taken to the emergency room in Grosseto, Tuscany.

On Monday morning, the Grosseto prosecutor’s office arrested the woman accused of voluntary murder.

The unnamed woman gave birth to the little boy about two days before allegedly killing him, police said.

The child’s body is in the morgue and an autopsy will be arranged.

The autopsy will also reveal whether the woman was in the last month of her pregnancy or whether the newborn was born prematurely.

According to an initial external investigation, the child’s death was not caused by suffocation or strangulation, but was said to have been left alone in the three-by-two-meter cabin for hours without milk or medical care.

Police spoke to several crew members after the tragic incident and they all revealed that they had no idea the woman was pregnant.

Colleagues explained that their stomachs would not be visible on sailing days under uniform and that they had not seen them in public suffering from diseases or conditions related to pregnancy.

Police are also said to have verified the witness statements with photos of the team members on their mobile phones – to see if the woman appeared pregnant in images.

After authorities carried out their checks on board the ship, the ship resumed its liner service.

The motive behind the tragic murder is currently unknown, but police are continuing to investigate the case.
