Cristiano Ronaldo responded to his 700th goal against Everton by throwing another celebration.

The Portuguese star normally celebrates his signature ‘SIUUU’ celebration after scoring but tried something new to celebrate his milestone when he scored the winner in a 2-1 win against Everton on Sunday.

After finishing past Jordan Pickford a minute before half time, striker Ronaldo ran slowly to the corner flag before turning to his teammates and hugging Marcus Rashford.

He then closed his eyes, as if in prayer, folded his hands and intertwined his fingers in an apparent show of ‘peace of mind’ after finally becoming the first player in history to score his 700th at club level.

Ronaldo’s goal was only his second of the season – and his first in the Premier League – after scoring a penalty against Moldovan minnow Sheriff Tiraspol in the Europa League on 15 September, almost a month ago.

Brazilian team-mate Antony, who scored the equalizer after Alex Iwobi’s early opener, joined Ronaldo’s joy by imitating the veteran’s pose, before tweeting ‘Good Night’ with a crying emoji above a photo of the pair.

After the game, Toffees boss Frank Lampard praised the 37-year-old: “It’s excellent. He is one of the best players the game has ever graced, in an era where we’ve had himself and Lionel Messi.

‘The mutual comparison doesn’t matter; they are both incredible players in football history.

“The numbers they collected, abnormal numbers that have become normal. When he was 699, I wanted him to score last in the Europa League (against Omonia Nicosia), but it wasn’t to be.”

Pundit and United legend Rio Ferdinand added: ‘700 goals. That’s more than I thought. He would have been in pain on the couch and that’s the answer, he goes out with something to prove and he does it.

“We talked about moving forward and Ronaldo, class always comes through. He would have been disappointed but 700 goals, to be the deciding one today, if anyone doubted him he put them in their place and the WhatsApp group will talk.”

The result puts Erik ten Hag’s resurgent team fifth in the standings, one point short of fourth-place Chelsea and their Champions League qualifying spots.
