Coronation Street fans complain Claire Sweeney is miscast as Tyrone’s drug addict mother Cassie: ‘This isn’t a part she’s meant to play!’

Coronation Street fans have complained that Claire Sweeney has been cast incorrectly as the new character Cassie Plummer.

The 52-year-old actress was introduced this year as the long-lost, drug-addicted mother of fan favorite Tyrone Dobbs (Alan Halsall).

Tyrone was stunned to learn his mother was alive after years of believing she was dead from a drug overdose, and furiously confronted his grandmother Evelyn (Maureen Lipman) for lying about her existence.

Cassie returned to Weatherfield determined to get clean so she could reconnect with her son, leading Tyrone and Evelyn to believe she had overcome her drug addiction.

Cassie insisted she had been clean for months and did her best to isolate Tyrone from Evelyn, insisting she come to stay with him.

New role: The actress, 52, was introduced this year as the long-lost drug-addicted mother of fan favorite Tyrone Dobbs (Alan Halsall)

But while Cassie was enjoying dinner with Tyrone in his living room, viewers discovered she was hiding an explosive secret.

When she opened her purse, it was revealed that Cassie hid a box of pregabalin for nerve pain, the exact drug she claimed she had given up on.

However, viewers have criticized the storyline, saying that Claire looks far too glamorous to convincingly play a drug addict.

Someone wrote on Twitter: “I can’t consider Claire Sweeny to be Tyrone’s mom, she’s supposed to be a junkie to begin with, but with perfect nails, perfect brows and Botox this isn’t a role she should play.”

Another added, “Cassie as Tyrone’s long-lost junkie mom just doesn’t work. The perfect shellac nails, Botox-treated forehead, dazzling white teeth and immaculate ombré eyebrows don’t fit the modus operandi.

A third agreed, writing: “Get rid of her, ridiculous storyline and what everyone says…her teeth are too white for a drug.”

A fourth repeated: “And a forehead with botox and ombré eyebrows to match the shining white, perfect teeth!

“When she was in the hospital, she also had a perfect manicure! I’ve never seen such a head of meth.”

While a fifth voted, “A popping head with a full set of veneers.” Get real. She would be toothless. And the Botox.’

Not convinced: Viewers, however, have criticized the storyline, saying Claire looks far too glamorous to convincingly play a drug addict

One wrote on Twitter, “Cassie, Tyrone’s long lost junkie, mom just ain’t working,” while another said, “I’ve never seen a meth head like that”

A sixth said, “Claire Sweeny has done so much work that her character could be Tyrone’s sister.”

And a seventh tweeted, “For a lifelong drug abuser she has beautiful white teeth, drugs f*** your teeth.”

It comes after Claire said she needed a ‘makeunder’ to play the troubled character on the popular soap.

Appearing on This Morning earlier this month, she joked that it was fun to go for a prettier look for live TV.

She said: ‘It’s such a luxury to have my hair and make-up done because with Corrie I get a make-under.

“The makeup department is great. I look so different, I feel different and I walk different.

“I’ve talked to my doctor and asked if you can advise me on this, and I’ve done a lot of research. I went to one of the places where they get advice about addiction.’

Claire added about the experience of taking part in the soap in general: ‘My first scene was a baptism of fire, and I love it. I always have to give myself a reality check.

“They (the casting directors) took a chance on me, and of course I auditioned and got the part.

“On the first day I was on the cobblestones and I felt more like an extra, which was nice because I could get used to it.”

Coronation Street airs Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays at 8pm on ITV1 and ITVX.
