Coronation Street actress Barbara Young dies at the age of 92 in hospital surrounded by her family
Coronation Street actress Barbara Young has died aged 92 in a Cambridge hospital surrounded by her family.
The actress, known for her role Doreen Fenwick in the soap, passed away peacefully on Thursday, her daughter Liza Pulman announced.
Liza, 54, posted a heartfelt tribute to Instagram on Saturday to share the sad news that her ‘beautiful, brilliant and warm-hearted’ mother had ‘slipped away’.
Barbara’s cause of death is unknown, but she has been in the hospital for the past few days.
Liza wrote, “To let people know that my beautiful, brilliant, stubborn, loud, warm-hearted, talented and quirky mother passed away at 10:30 PM on Thursday night.”
“My sister Cory and I sat by her hospital bed for 30 straight hours and finally, as is so often the case, she slipped away in our absence with a beautiful nurse named Mercy (you couldn’t spell it) tending to her.”

She continued: “The care she received in those last days in Addenbrookes was remarkable – considered, careful and empathetic – and to one person they all said how much they had loved my mother, how she made them laugh and how she always been interested in them.
“She was 43 years without my dad, 30 years without a cigarette and 20 years without booze but never without a humbug and I like to think she’s sitting with my dad now with a big dry martini and a cigarette when she can really do what she wants now damn will.
“I am my father’s daughter and those who know me well will know that I am never short of words, but today I have no words to describe how much I will miss her. You did well mom. Safe travels.
“Barbara Young – February 9, 1931-April 27, 2023 ❤.”
Liza shared a number of photos alongside her post, one of which showed her mother smiling broadly in a glamorous lace dress.
Another cute snap from the Christmas season showed her posing in a pair of sparkly reindeer goggles.
Finally, the mother-daughter duo could be seen cooking together and tasting their creation.
Barbara starred in Coronation Street in 1961, 1982 and 1991 as characters Betty Ridgeway, Dorothy Stockwell and Barbara Platt before her most recent role as Doreen in 2007.

She has also played multiple roles over the years in The Bill and featured in the Channel 5 soap opera Family Affairs.
More recently, the actress has worked on Last of the Summer Wine, Hollyoaks and starred in the short film Sailor Boy.
Her last role was as Grandma Sarah in the British-German biographical film The Keeper in 2018.
