Coles employee offers Aussies a behind-the-scenes tour of the grocery giant when she gets stuck in a clogged drain and nasty leak
- TikTok video shows the particularly dirty and boring jobs Coles employees have to do
- The tasks shown range from emptying waste bins to working in sub-zero cold stores
- Some viewers said they had also worked in supermarkets and tasks were known
A Coles employee has given Aussies a behind-the-scenes look at what’s going on at the supermarket giant and spotlighted the numerous boring jobs customers don’t see.
TikTok user carlyj1980 shared the clip last week, showing her how she unblocked an ice cream maker, dragged supplies from the cold store, emptied a bin full of trash, cleaned up spills and scrubbed a clogged drain on her hands and knees.
In a nod to the unglamorous work, the clip is overdubbed with several members of the famously wealthy Kardashian family claiming to “just live.”
The clip has been watched by more than 180,000 people and attracted a torrent of reactions, many of whom said it gave a pretty accurate picture of what it was like to work for a major supermarket.
“As a Coles employee, this is such an atmosphere,” said one person.
“This is literally exactly what I do,” said another.
“Oh yeah, clearing those drains is always my favorite,” added a third.
While the grocery store has been cutting back on cashiers in recent years by rolling out self-service aisles, it seems the grunt work is still largely done by hand.
Many commenters on the video said they also worked at a large supermarket and it was a pretty accurate representation of their day

But deliveries could be the next process to get the tech deal, with the supermarket chain announcing last week that it would offer to deliver customers’ online store orders by drone.
“We are excited to expand our pilot drone delivery program with Wing to our customers in Queensland,” said Coles Head of Network Development and Customer Delivery James Geddes.
“The service provides an easy and effective way to deliver daily necessities to our customers’ homes in minutes.”
The program will be available from Wednesday in the store of Ormeau Village Shopping Center on the Gold Coast.
