Cole Palmer is Chelsea’s ‘main man’ and feels better at Stamford Bridge than he ‘EVER’ did at Man City, insists Jamie Carragher after the youngster rescues Blues draw from the penalty spot

Jamie Carragher praised Cole Palmer for his ‘football arrogance’ after the youngster scored Chelsea’s decisive equalizer against Man City on Sunday.

Palmer played against his former club for the first time since sealing his £42.5million summer move to Stamford Bridge from Man City in search of more regular first-team opportunities.

The 21-year-old struggled for consistent game time at City after rising through the ranks at the Etihad before eventually being promoted to Pep Guardiola’s senior team.

Palmer has since become an integral part of Mauricio Pochettino’s Chelsea squad, holding his nerve to draw the home side level from the penalty spot.

Blues striker Armando Broja was fouled in the penalty area by a clumsy challenge from Ruben Dias and Palmer collected the ball and took the decisive penalty.

He smashed the ball past a diving Ederson and observed a muted celebration as Stamford Bridge erupted after the home side guaranteed themselves a point against the league leaders.

Carragher praised Palmer’s composure as he finished confidently, telling Sky Sports: ‘What a penalty under that pressure against a keeper who knows him so well and finds the top corner.

‘The arrogance that boy has, football arrogance, you can’t make it. The whole world will feel like they are watching him, friends and family probably City fans, 4-4 feels good, no one should be a loser in this match.”

The Liverpool legend continued to marvel at Palmer’s performances, labeling the rising star as the ‘main man’ in Chelsea’s star-studded squad.

‘What strikes me and I often get frustrated by this is that players play for big football clubs and don’t really play. They will say I won the league three times, the Champions League, but we all know them. are a team player.

‘I admire him now that he has moved to Chelsea. He will feel better in the last few weeks at Chelsea than he ever did at City, regardless of which medal he has won.

‘As a player you know when you deserve a medal and when you look from the outside in, it doesn’t feel great. He could spend the next two or three years at Chelsea and win the FA Cup and feel his body of work here is a lot better than what he did at City.

‘That happens often, nonsense to me and so many players say they won this, won that. As a player, everyone knows when you play a big role in a team and he feels like the most important man in this Chelsea team.”

Palmer is a current star for the England Under 21 team and played a crucial role in the Young Lions team that won the European Championship this summer.

Now Carragher believes his latest performances for Chelsea make him a serious contender to be included in Gareth Southgate’s England squad for the upcoming European Championship, despite still waiting for a first senior cap.

“He seems to me to be the player who makes a late rise to go to a tournament in the summer and you think there is a good chance he will end up in that European Championship squad,” he said.

The winger cut a calm figure in his post-match press conference as he was presented with the man of the match award by Chelsea team-mate Raheem Sterling.

Palmer described playing against his former side as a ‘very strange’ experience and showed his admiration for City.

‘Very strange to play against City. I have the utmost respect for the club where I worked for fifteen years. Another great game. I know a lot of City fans. That’s the game.

“Before the match I was excited to see some familiar faces.”
