Classic catch! Young gun Jack Edwards snares one of the best wickets you will ever see as Sydney Sixers waltz into Big Bash decider after beating shell-shocked Brisbane Heat

  • Jack Edwards had a night to enjoy in the Big Bash final qualifier
  • Snared 2-26, with one catch showing off his erratic reflexes
  • Also took two sharp outfield catches for the Sydney Sixers

The hype surrounding Sydney Sixers youngster Jack Edwards is justified after the all-rounder bagged perhaps the catch of the summer on Friday night.

Edwards, 23, was everywhere for the men in magenta as they booked their place in another Big Bash decider, suffocating the previously unbeaten Brisbane Heat when it mattered.

He finished with figures of 2-26 from his four overs after being asked to open the bowling – and Edwards’ attempt to send Spencer Johnson back to the sheds late in the match was bizarre.

Johnson hit a ball back to Edwards, and the tail batsman could only watch in dismay as the young gun stuck out his right hand to claim a sublime reflex catch that he won’t soon forget.

For good measure, Edwards finished with two crisp catches in the outfield, and also hit three boundaries while at the top of the order.

Edwards grew up on Sydney’s northern beaches and was an obvious sporting talent from an early age who also excelled on the rugby field while studying at St Augustine’s College in Brookvale.

But cricket was his calling – and after making his first-class debut for NSW in 2018, success was sometimes hard to come by.

Sydney Sixers captain Moises Henriques has always liked what he sees – and Edwards has delivered his career so far on the Gold Coast at Carrara Stadium.

Remarkably, Edwards wasn’t even man of the match on the Glitter Strip.

That honor went to left-handed Ben Dwarshuis, who finished with impressive figures of 5-21 from 3.5 overs as the visitors defended their total of 152 and won by 39 runs.

The Sixers will now host the Big Bash final at the SCG on January 24.
