Pontcysyllte Aqueduct was the backdrop as Cillian Murphy filmed his latest scenes as Tommy Shelby for the upcoming Peaky Blinders film, The Immortal Man.

Principal photography on the Birmingham-based drama moved to North East Wales on Sunday, with Murphy dressed as infamous figurehead Shelby while filming on a tour boat.

The Oscar winner, 48, was joined by co-star Packy Lee, who returns as series regular Johnny Dogs for the highly anticipated feature-length spin-off.

Cast and crew were seen navigating the Llangollen Canal on the 100-foot aqueduct, with Murphy and Lee sitting in the front of a narrowboat as helicopters monitored the scene from above.

Wearing Shelby’s signature overcoat and Baker Boy cap, Murphy suggested his character was involved in another violent confrontation by revealing a nasty prosthetic scar on his right cheek.

A Grade II listed structure and part of a UNESCO World Heritage Site, the Pontcysyllte Aqueduct towers over the River Dee and is used exclusively by narrowboats, allowing them access to the nearby village of Llangollen.

“It’s very satisfying to be working with Steven Knight and Tom Harper again on the film version of Peaky Blinders. This is one for the fans.”

Director Tom says: ‘When I first directed Peaky Blinders over a decade ago, we didn’t know what the series would become, but we knew there was something in the alchemy of the cast and writing that felt explosive.

Peaky Blinders launched in 2013 and attracted huge audiences both in the UK and abroad, landing roles for silver screen stars such as Tom Hardy and Anya Taylor-Joy.

The show is loosely based on a real-life Birmingham gang of the same name, operating between 1880 and 1920, who took part in similar illegal activities.

Peaky Blinders aired six series in nine years and ended with Tommy, led to believe he had a terminal illness, surviving an assassination attempt orchestrated by his own cousin before killing him and moving for a new life.
