Chelsea and Matildas star Sam Kerr says she would KILL girlfriend Kristie Mewis on football field

Sam Kerr and his girlfriend Kristie Mewis take soccer so seriously they would “kill” each other on the field.

The Chelsea superstar and Matildas, 29, and Mewis, 31, who plays for the United States national team, have been together for almost two years.

They’ve never been shy about publicly sharing their obvious love and utter adoration for each other, but that doesn’t mean they aren’t acutely aware of what their relationship can look like to some coaches, players, and fans.

Kerr said that while she knows “the fans have our back,” both she and Mewis hope all levels of the game understand that when it comes to soccer, there is no love lost between the pair.

“What worries me most of all is that our coaches or teammates don’t think we can separate them. I hope people know that when it’s time to train or play, it doesn’t come into play,” he said in an interview with English magazine Gaffer.

‘I remember one time in Newcastle (Australia) she came in, we were playing against each other, and we faced each other. We would kill each other. But I do worry that people think we’re not serious about our careers.

Soccer players have faced horrific and stereotypical comments about their sexuality for decades.

Matilda skipper Sam Kerr is gearing up for a big 2023, which includes a World Cup on home soil.

Kerr, pictured winning the Women's Super League with Chelsea last year, is one of the most recognizable female footballers on the ground.

Matildas captain Sam Kerr is one of the most recognizable footballers on the planet, and the Chelsea star has always been open about her sexuality.

Many women play with and against their partners, and have done so for many years; without a hint of not giving everything for his coaches, teammates and fans.

The fact that Kerr felt the need to address and highlight the fact with hyperbole like ‘we’d kill each other’ on the field speaks to that.

If you’ve ever watched the feisty and ridiculously skilled Kerr, who made her international debut at the tender age of 15, play, you know she could never compromise on her level of effort on the pitch.

And when Kerr and Mewis first met, on a football pitch, of course, they weren’t “killing” each other, but it wasn’t exactly a warm welcome from the Aussie.

“We played a game against each other, but I thought her team was crazy. When I play, I’m like an agitator and she (Mewis) was getting very angry,” Kerr said.

“We always talked about this time when he tried to get the ball, it was a free kick for his team. He put the ball down and I kicked it and said, really? Other than that, we didn’t know we didn’t know each other.

Through the wonders of direct messaging on Instagram, the couple forged an online relationship before meeting in person three months later and heading straight into two weeks of Covid quarantine together.

The relationship, which began long after Kerr’s romance with former teammate and US club star Nikki Stanton faded, remained out of the public eye for a while.

But then the time came when Kerr and Mewis jumped into the public consciousness.

Kerr and the Australians, who were competing for a bronze medal against the American Mewis team at the Tokyo Olympics, were devastated after an entertaining, if heartbreaking, 4-3 loss.

After the match, the dejected Australian captain sat on the pitch at Kashima Stadium in disbelief.

Mewis then came out to comfort his devastated girlfriend and announce to the world that they were a couple.

While the pair no doubt struggle not to live in each other’s pocket, they clearly enjoy every second of their time together, whether it’s on the field or out.

Mewis plays for New Jersey’s Gotham FC in the legendary National Women’s Soccer League, while Kerr is the face of the Women’s Super League in England, where she plays for Chelsea.

They embraced with joy after a 1-1 draw between their national teams in 2021 and flooded social media with touching examples of how much they love each other and their wide circle of friends.

But the biggest thing on Kerr’s mind right now is the upcoming Women’s World Cup in Australia and New Zealand, which is less than six months away.

Despite his seasons in the WSL and the Champions League, a lot will weigh heavily on Kerr’s mind ahead of a World Cup on home soil, a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity.

It’s clear that both she and Mewis won’t be holding back in the slightest, as both Australia and the USA have completely realistic hopes of taking the tournament.

“We’re looking forward to the next six months until the World Cup, doing everything we can,” Kerr said.

“We both feel that we have been fighting for this World Cup for so long that it will be like we are giving it our all for the next six months and then it will be like a breath of fresh air.”

Kerr, like many Australians abroad, could not return to his native Western Australia, which had some of the toughest restrictions in the world.

But luckily, the World Cup and the upcoming Nations Cup against the Czech Republic, Spain and Jamaica mean that Kerr will be able to enjoy his favorite country on earth, much to the delight of Australian rules football fans.

“This next international window in February is going to be amazing,” Kerr said of the Nations Cup, which begins on February 16.

“Every time we have played at home we have broken an audience record. We played Melbourne recently and had an amazing crowd… Australians love Matildas.

“Everyone in Australia is absolutely thrilled [about the World Cup]. My family is excited because they don’t have to pull out their passports and spend thousands of dollars,” joked Kerr, whose globe-trotting exploits in soccer have no doubt gotten those passports some stamps.
