King Charles III’s joint Private Secretary is Sir Clive Alderton, who has been a trusted adviser to the King and Queen’s consort since 2006.

He takes the role alongside Sir Edward Young, who also served as the Queen’s Private Secretary.

Sir Edward was kept in post by King Charles III after the Queen’s death and is known in the palace corridors as an ‘axe man’ for his ability to deliver bad news, particularly regarding job cuts, a skill that came in handy when dozens of Clarence House staff were made aware of being dismissed while on duty for the Queen in Edinburgh.

Sir Edward joined the Royal Household in 2004, where he was the Queen’s Assistant and then Deputy Private Secretary, before being promoted to his current position in 2017.

Sir Clive, a former diplomat, is known for his love of culture, his intelligence and his sense of humour.

The trusted courtier once held a position in the Foreign Office and, at the start of his career, lived in several countries, including Singapore, Poland and France.

In 2006, Sir Clive was appointed Deputy Private Secretary to the then Prince of Wales and The Duchess of Cornwall, and three years later was promoted to Private Secretary for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs to Their Royal Highnesses, becoming Ambassador to Mauritania and Morocco.

Since 2015, when he became Charles’s chief of staff, he has been a constant by his side.

Working alongside Sir Clive and Sir Edward is Dr John Sorabji, the King’s Deputy Chief of Staff.

Prior to joining the Royal Household, he worked at University College London and also practiced law.
