Career expert reveals how to nail a job interview when you think you’re under-qualified for the role

A career expert has revealed the trick to mastering a job interview if you don’t think you’re qualified enough for the role.

Erin McGoff said candidates should never feel like they are wasting an interviewer’s time and encourage job seekers to apply for positions even if they don’t meet all the criteria in the description.

Rather than admitting that you don’t think you have enough experience for a role, Erin said to instead focus on the “transferable skills” you have that would be useful in the job.

In a TikTok videothe life advice guru gave an example of what not to answer when asked what makes you a good fit for a role.

‘That’s not true, I’m underqualified. I don’t have more than three years of experience. I’ve only worked for small companies, I don’t even know much about TV production,” she pretended to answer.

Erin reminded job seekers that they would not have gotten an interview if the employer didn’t think they would be a good fit for the position.

“Why would they interview you if they didn’t think you were right for the role?” she asked.

“When you’re in the room, you belong there, they want you to be the perfect person for the job.”

Erin said to instead talk about the qualities you possess and reminded followers that if they meet 100 percent of the job description, they are probably overqualified.

‘Focus on your soft and transferable skills and especially on your unique offering. What do you have that other candidates might not have?’ she said.

Hundreds were grateful for the helpful and reassuring advice and shared their own interview tips.

‘After I became a teacher, I started working in the media. Soft skills and examples of leadership can go a long way!’ said a woman.

“I was underqualified for almost every job I’ve had,” wrote a second.

“It just happened to me and I got the job. I thought I wasn’t qualified because I don’t have a BA, but a big part of my job is customer service and I have great customer service,” a third explained.

“Positive self-talk works the same way as negative self-talk, so when you tell yourself you’re great and qualified, you’ll actually feel it!” someone added.
