Cairns Esplanade needles: Horrified father’s warning after ‘disgusting’ find in children’s playground

A shocked dad has warned parents after finding needles dumped at a children's playground.

The man was visiting the Cairns Esplanade with his children on Saturday when he spotted two discarded syringes on top of playground equipment.

Fearing for the safety of others, he posted a photo of the syringes wrapped in a tissue on Facebook with the caption: “Serves as a reminder to inspect.” [the] playground with your children.'

Shocked parents were disgusted by the needles callously thrown away in the park.

'This is disgusting, it was such a good place to take my son to run around and play. Guess we'll have to find a safer place to take him,” one user wrote.

Another said: 'We've been coming here for ages and never had a problem but I guess we won't risk it this time.'

The man who uploaded the post said the needles were removed and placed in the trash.

Cairn Regional Council said needles should be placed in bins in playground toilets.

“Needles and syringes should be disposed of in a sturdy, puncture-resistant, closed container,” a spokesperson said Yahoo.

'The municipality makes sharps waste bins available in the toilet facilities of public facilities.'

Visitors are urged to report any sightings of needles on the playground and nearby areas to the council.
