A young woman has died of stab wounds and a man is trapped after a dramatic overnight police chase.

Police rushed to a unit on Short Street in Caboolture, about 27 miles north of Brisbane, around 8:30pm after receiving reports that a woman had been assaulted.

A woman in her 20s was found at the scene with stab wounds. She was taken to Caboolture Hospital in critical condition but sadly died of her injuries.

At approximately 10:40 p.m., officers flagged a Holden Commodore as a vehicle of interest traveling north on the Bruce Highway to the Sunshine Coast.

After a dramatic chase, police used a tire deflating device.

The Commodore reportedly crashed into a police car as it continued to move on the highway before the 29-year-old driver was apprehended and taken into custody.

Police believe the man and woman knew each other.
