A young man has died on a notorious beach after being pulled unconscious from the water.
Bystanders picked up the man, aged in his 20s, from Tallow Beach, near Byron Bay, just before 7.30am on Thursday.
The man was found about 200 meters south of a ‘treacherous’ area known as Cozy Corner, which has been linked to a number of other previous drownings.
It is also the place where Belgian backpacker Theo Hayez is said to have gone missing in mid-2019.

Surf Life Saving NSW duty officer Jimmy Keogh said attempts were made to resuscitate the man but he could not be revived.
“It’s a black mark… there have been numerous incidents and also drownings in recent years,” Mr Keogh said told ABC.
‘It’s a very open beach; it does catch a large swell, which produces strong cracks and large troughs.”
The area is patrolled by lifeguards, but usually only between 9am and 5pm.
