Burnley have confirmed the release of two players following the expiry of their contracts this summer.

The Clarets will play their football in the Championship after being relegated from the Premier League and finishing 19th.

And they will do so without former England midfielder Jack Cork and Johann Berg Gudmundsson.

A club statement said on Tuesday: ‘As previously announced, Jack Cork and Johann Berg Gudmundsson will leave the club when their contracts expire this summer.

“Burnley Football Club thanks all the departing players for their contributions and wishes them all the best for their future careers.”

The announcement comes as no surprise, as it is already publicly known that both would leave after the end of the campaign.

The pair were given an emotional farewell at Turf Moor on Sunday, with the home fans giving them a standing ovation as they started the match against Nottingham Forest in the second half.

Cork made 266 appearances for the club, while Gudmundsson donned a Burnley shirt 199 times after joining in 2016.

“It was emotional,” Gudmundsson said after Sunday’s match against Clarets+. ‘Saying goodbye to this place after eight fantastic years, seven in the Premier League, one lifting the trophy in the Championship, there are so many great memories.

“It’s a sad day to say goodbye to all the fans and the friends I’ve made here over the years.

‘It was good to be back at Turf Moor for the last time. Obviously we wanted it to happen under different circumstances, but that wasn’t the intention. It was nice to walk around and say goodbye to everyone.”

Burnley also revealed that contract offers have been made to Jay Rodriguez and Charlie Taylor, while options to extend the contracts of Josh Brownhill and Bailey Peacock Farrell have been activated. The loans of Mike Tresor and Maxime Esteve have also been made permanent.

The club is also in discussions with the parent clubs and representatives of Lorenz Assignon and Jacob Bruun Larsen to activate permanent moves. David Datro Fofana has returned to his parent club.
