Haylea Cooney did not adhere to the ‘black tie’ dress code for the 2022 Brownlow Medal in Melbourne on Sunday night, late in a blazer and shorts instead of the usual cocktail dress.
The wife of former Western Bulldogs star Adam Cooney instead played it cool and casual for the AFL night of nights in a khaki short suit she bought from Country Road, telling Herald Sun on Tuesday she was ‘just me who I am’.
“I’ve never been more nervous in my life than going to the Brownlow,” she said, recounting how she’d struggled to find a dress for the ceremony with just four days’ notice.

The footy WAG continued: ‘Adam told me on Thursday we were going. We now live in Geelong and I hurried around but couldn’t find anything.’
Haylea admitted she usually went on ‘crash diets’ for months prior to red carpet events, but this time she didn’t have time to worry about that and had to make do with a black crop top and ‘big chunky boots’ fashion-wise. under her oversized blazer.
“I was a little out of touch with the black tie dress code and sweating in my big chunky boots and my Country Road suit, but it was the first year I felt really comfortable,” she said. ‘It wasn’t disrespectful; I was just myself.’

Haylea posted photos of her outfit to Instagram on Monday, posing with her husband, who was wearing a black-on-black suit, alongside the caption: ‘Brownlow 2022 ready.
‘Four days’ notice period (thanks, ads). Definitely the most comfortable I’ve ever been on: no crash diet, no dress, no heels, no handbag… I don’t really know how they let me in.
‘As nice as always with you. Big thanks to my sister [Danielle Gardiner] for her magic on my face and hair.’

Haylea said she and Adam arrived at the venue deliberately late to avoid the media scrum, and ended up receiving “a lot of positive and funny comments” from guests.
She has been to the Brownlow dozens of times during her husband’s football career, with Adam winning the prestigious medal in 2008.
The following year, Haylea made the worst-dressed list for a strapless, mermaid-cut dress made of a white material that looked like shiny leather in photos.

Writing for the Herald Sun in 2016, Haylea said she “shed a few tears” when she woke up the next morning to read what critics had said about her dress.
“No girl ever wears a dress thinking she’s going to be on the worst dressed list,” she said.
“She’ll walk on the carpet and think she looks scalding hot and it’s only you who makes her feel different. Remember this before you get too critical.’
