British tourist, 35, dies after falling from a balcony in Ibiza party resort

A British holidaymaker has died after falling from a balcony at the Ibiza party resort of San Antonio, in the latest tragedy to hit the tourist hotspot.

The 35-year-old man died on the spot early this morning. The alarm was raised just after 3:15 a.m., but emergency services rushed to the scene said the man was already dead when they arrived.

Local authorities are investigating, according to police sources, that the man was on a second-floor balcony when he went over the edge.

The first 999 call that came in indicated he was lying on the floor under a block of flats near a UK supermarket and a short walk from the seafront and popular beach clubs.

Witnesses reportedly told police and paramedics who arrived on the scene that the man jumped from a second-floor balcony.

Some reports describe the building he crashed out of as a hotel, even though it is an apartment building where vacationers stay.

There have been a number of tragedies involving tourists in the party resort of San Antonio (Sant Antoni de Portmany) in recent months.

A spokesman for an emergency coordination center run by the regional government said: ‘We were alerted at 3:17 this morning.

“The first reports were that a man was lying unconscious in the street.

“He was already dead when the first ambulance arrived and there was nothing they could do to save him.”

A Civil Guard spokesman said after confirming the dead man was a British 35-year-old: “It is too early to say at this stage what happened.

“The investigation is ongoing.”

San Antonio, or Sant Antoni de Portmany, is known for its nightlife and is a popular area for British tourists

It comes less than two weeks after a 22-year-old British tourist died at the same resort after jumping from a three-star hotel.

Amateur footballer John McKenna, from Carlisle in Cumbria, was pronounced dead at the scene after desperate efforts by paramedics to save his life.

His friend and former Carlisle United player Josh Dixon said in a tribute at the time: ‘Absolutely heartbroken writing this. One of my best friends all through school.

Everywhere you went you put a smile on someone’s face. Will be a huge miss for all of us. Rest in peace big man.’

Another friend, Olly Doyle, said of his mate, who was known as ‘big John’: ‘A real gentleman and the most genuinely nice lad there is.

‘Never a smile off his face, one of the best. Rest in peace big man.’

Electrician John, who stayed at the azuline Hotel Llevant where the tragedy took place, played for Carlisle City Sunday League Premier side Scotby FC.

The club said in a tweet after learning of John’s death: “Today we lost a legend, a brilliant player but an even better human being.

In another similar tragedy, a 24-year-old British woman died last September after falling from a balcony at the Rosamar Hotel in Cala de Bou, just a short drive from San Antonio.

She was named shortly after the tragedy as Robyn-Eve Maines, from Wallasey, Merseyside.

In a tribute to her then-daughter, mother Clare Maines said: ‘Our beautiful 24-year-old daughter sadly passed away after falling 30 feet from her balcony. There are no words for us. We are really heartbroken.’
