British fashion industry pays tribute to the Queen: Brands take part in salute to the late monarch

The fashion industry has paid tribute to Queen Elizabeth in a special show at The Fashion Awards paying tribute to the late monarch.

On Monday night, the late monarch was celebrated in a section titled ‘the fashion salute show’, featuring British brands including Alexander McQueen, Burberry and Christopher Kane.

Naomi Campbell presented a tribute to Queen Elizabeth on stage and models displayed royal-inspired works on a circular catwalk in the center of London’s Royal Albert Hall.

As the designs were paraded through the hall, images of the late monarch were shown on a large screen in the hall, while musicians in ceremonial uniforms performed.

The 2022 British Fashion Awards saw the stars descend on London’s Royal Albert Hall on Monday, with celebrities including Rita Ora, Lily James and Florence Pugh leading the red carpet.

One of the most anticipated moments on the global fashion calendar, The British Fashion Awards celebrates fashion at the intersection of culture and is a global entertainment platform for brands, creatives, designers, artists and tastemakers coming together to celebrate the industry.

The special show came after London Fashion Week fell within the national mourning period for Queen Elizabeth’s death on September 8.

The annual event ran from September 15 to 20, with closing events that were planned for September 19, the day of the Queen’s state funeral, canceled or postponed.

At the time, the British Fashion Council said the week’s display should go ahead, but designers were asked to “respect the mood of the nation and the period of national mourning when considering the timing of the launch of their image”.

Some brands, including Burberry and Raf Simons, decided to cancel their September shows, while smaller fashion labels that couldn’t afford to cancel paid tributes to the late monarch at the time.

Designer Harris Reed, whose clothes Adele and Beyoncé have worn, decided to continue his show to support the economy.

“It’s crucial that when the big shows are pulling out, we young designers stick together and make a statement with our clothes. We are here, we are together and we are supporting the British economy in that way,’ she told the Independent at the time.

“Thriving in difficult times was one of the late Queen’s trademarks,” designer Mark Fast said at the time. Her brand continued with her debut show during fashion week.

Designer Bora Aksu added: “It takes a lot of hard work to create seasonal collections and I think continuing [and] Showcasing our work will only help uphold London’s reputation as one of the world’s leading fashion capitals. I’m sure the queen would have agreed and supported it.

In 2018, the Queen sat next to Anna Wintour before presenting designer Richard Quinn with the first Queen Elizabeth II Award for British Design at London Fashion Week.

Mr. Quinn’s show was due to run on Monday, September 19, but was moved to the next day so that it would not run on the same day as the late monarch’s funeral.
