A British Afghanistan veteran was stabbed while on holiday in Austria after staring at a man wearing shorts despite the freezing weather, reports say.

The 42-year-old was visiting the city of Linz, in Upper Austria, when he fell victim to the shocking surprise attack on Tuesday morning.

According to local reports, he was in Linz’s main square around 8:30 am.

The Brit is said to have looked at another man wearing shorts in the square – despite it being around 4 degrees Celsius in the city on Tuesday morning.

The stranger promptly pulled out a knife and stabbed the war veteran in the shoulder.

Despite the winter temperatures, the man – said to be around 6ft tall – is said to have been wearing only black shorts and black outerwear.

The attacker also had short hair, a full black beard and a tattoo on his lower right leg, according to the Briton’s description given after the attack.

Austrian news channel Kronen Zeitung stated that the veteran “looked into the eyes of a scantily clad stranger for a little too long” before being stabbed “without saying a word.”

After the attack, a passerby from Traun helped the bleeding Briton and called rescuers to the scene.

The knife had penetrated the Briton’s bone, Zeitung reported.

He was transported to the nearby Linz hospital and received medical care.

Fortunately, he is in a stable condition and his life is not in danger.

According to reports, no arrest had been made in connection with the attack as of Tuesday.
