Breakfast experts reveal the recipe for the perfect bacon sandwich

You might like yours with a dollop of ketchup or a drizzle of HP sauce. But for the perfect bacon sandwich, it’s best to add nothing at all.

That’s the claim of a breakfast expert who says all you need for your sarnie is bread, butter and bacon. Adding anything else – like herbs, pomegranate seeds or even a salad – is wrong.

Guise Bule, chairman of the English Breakfast Society, said the ‘British institution’ should be made with just three ingredients after hearing about other variants of the breakfast butter.

He added: ‘[Britons] knows exactly what a bacon sandwich is. It’s something their mother made with love and she made it the same way every time.

‘Toasted white sliced bread, mildly salted English butter and good old British bacon. There is simply no replacement.”

It is unclear whether condiments such as tomato sauce are allowed and whether they should be added to the sandwich or set aside.

Many have complained that the breakfast staple has been confused by cafes who are now adding too many fancy ingredients.

One customer said he was annoyed when his herb sandwich came out – and was offered a salad with it.

Tony Peakall said he struggled to find a traditional sandwich at his home in Crouch End, north London.

He wrote on Facebook: ‘I know, I know, First World problems, but this is a Crouch End problem: where can you get a good old fashioned bacon sandwich?

“I went to a cafe today and asked for a bacon sandwich. “Would you like salad with that?” No thanks, just a bacon sandwich. ‘It comes on a plate with sprigs of herbs, sprinkled with more herbs and pomegranate seeds, plus of course blooming sourdough bread. My HP sauce doesn’t go well with this.’

Brits spend around £1.37 billion on bacon every year and ten bacon sandwiches are eaten every second in Britain.

The BLT (bacon, lettuce and tomato) was recently voted Britain’s favorite sandwich, according to a poll by bread maker Hovis.

This was followed by chicken salad, while tuna mayonnaise and fish finger sandwiches came in third.
